The Bank of Spain reorganises its departments and its management team

The restructuring has occurred following the departure of Galo Nuño, General Director of Institutional Relations, European Affairs and Transparency, who will focus on teaching and research, and of other senior officials, such as Secretary General Francisco Javier Priego and Deputy General Director Jaime Herrero.

The General Director of Institutional Relations, European Affairs and Transparency of the Bank of Spain, Galo Nuño, has left his position after accepting an offer to dedicate himself to academic and research activities, a departure that has prompted changes in the internal organisation of the institution.

The Executive Commission of the Bank of Spain has given the green light to the creation of the General Directorate of Institutional Relations, which will unify activities related to transparency and openness to society that were previously scattered across various areas. This directorate will be led by Alberto Ríos, who was previously the General Director of Financial Conduct and Banknotes.

The new directorate includes three departments: Conduct, responsible for transparency and balance between entities and clients; Transparency and Branches, which manages financial education and the branches; and lastly Coordination, which maintains national and international institutional relations, with Inés Calderón as Deputy General Director

The Bank of Spain has also approved that the General Directorate of Operations, Markets and Payment Systems, which will continue to be headed by Juan Ayuso, will be expanded to include activities related to payment methods, incorporating competencies over cash that previously depended on Financial Conduct and Banknotes.

In addition, other senior officials, such as the Secretary General Francisco Javier Priego and the Deputy General Director Jaime Herrero, have also stepped back from their executive functions, which has prompted additional reorganisations in senior management.

Thus, the Executive Commission has opened two calls under the “expression” modality to fill these positions. This modality, very common in international institutions, allows all internal and external candidates who wish to apply and meet the requirements.

Additionally, it has agreed to create a Deputy General Directorate for the areas linked to data of the General Directorate of Strategy, People and Data, a position that will also be filled through an expression of interest.

These changes occur in a period of two restructurings since the arrival of José Luis Escrivá as governor, and coincide with the departure in recent months of nearly a dozen senior executives in the front line.

According to the Bank of Spain, the aim of these changes in the organisational structure is to improve the bank's efficiency, centralise transparency functions and adapt to changes in the financial and payment sectors due to technological advances.
