The limit would be annual and would be updated year by year in such a way that it could rise to a maximum of +6% over a period of four years. These measures could come into effect on 1 December.
Opinion of the Bankinter analysis team:
Good news for the European auto sector. Until now, the tariffs established in Europe for the entry of Chinese cars were limited to pure electric vehicles. As a result, imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles have accelerated and could reach around 800,000 vehicles in the total for 2026, +165% year on year.
This measure aims to reduce the share of Chinese hybrids from the current 12% to 6%. This limitation, if confirmed, would apply to all imports from China, including those from Western manufacturers, but would not penalise Chinese manufacturers with plants in Europe. The regulation seeks to hinder the entry of vehicles produced with lower costs due to subsidies or benefits that create unfair competition for European manufacturers.
