Cox advances in Guatemala with a new energy project of 126 million dollars

Cox has been awarded a new energy generation and storage project using batteries (BESS) in Guatemala for 126 million dollars, strengthening its presence in one of the markets with the greatest potential for the development of sustainable energy infrastructure in Central America.

The company has explained that the project will have 76 MW of generation capacity and 27 MW of awarded power, obtained as part of a long-term public tender for electricity supply in Guatemala. The contract will have a duration of 15 years and an awarded unit price of 88.66 dollars per MW.

The award represents approximately contracted revenues of 126.5 million dollars during the first 15 years of operation. In addition, there is the potential for marketing the surplus energy in the wholesale market, estimated at 42.6 GWh annually, which could generate around 70 million dollars additional during the life of the project.

The installation will produce approximately 113.3 GWh of energy per year and, once the contractual period is finished, will have an estimated useful life of another 15 years, extending its long-term value generation capacity.

The project will contribute to strengthening the flexibility and reliability of the electricity system in Guatemala by storing energy for delivery during peak demand times. This capacity will allow for the optimisation of renewable generation integration, improve grid stability, and promote a more efficient use of the country’s electrical infrastructure.

This new award adds to the project that Cox previously obtained in the PEG4 tender, consisting of two solar plants currently being developed in the regions of Zacapa and Chiquimulilla, the construction of which has already begun and for which the company has secured financing through CIFI, a leading platform for investment in sustainable and high-impact infrastructure projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The project includes a installed capacity of 130 MWp and is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2027, consolidating the company's energy asset portfolio in Guatemala.
