The study analyses the perception and adoption of this financial asset in Spain and concludes that, with 8% support as a way to preserve purchasing power, the digital asset surpasses traditional safe-haven currencies such as the US dollar (6%) and the Swiss franc (4%).

The first Bitstack Barometer "Spain and Bitcoin", produced in collaboration with research firm Selvitys, reveals that Bitcoin is the second currency that Spaniards trust the most to preserve its value over the next ten years, only behind the euro (65%). With 8% support, the digital asset surpasses traditional safe-haven currencies such as the US dollar (6%) and the Swiss franc (4%).

The study analyses the perception and adoption of this financial asset in Spain through a survey conducted with 2,000 people aged between 18 and 64.

Key Conclusions from the Barometer

Lack of real knowledge: although 95% of Spaniards claim to have heard of Bitcoin, only 18% say they would be able to explain how it works to another person. Even among current owners of the asset, only 54% feel capable of explaining it.

Adoption rate and gender gap: 9% of the general population owns Bitcoin. Ownership is predominantly led by men (12% compared to 6% of women) and is concentrated in the 25 to 34 years age group (17%), in contrast to those over 55, where it falls to 3%.

Gateway to investment: for 28% of Spanish owners, Bitcoin represented their first financial investment in life (a percentage that jumps to 44% in the 25 to 34 age group).

Retirement tool: 45% of those under 45 agree that Bitcoin can become a useful tool for planning their retirement.

Long-term investment: the main reason for accumulating it is long-term investment (47%), diversification (39%), and protection against inflation (37%). Additionally, 47% plan to hold their funds for more than three years.

Opinion on Public Policies in Spain

The Bitstack platform barometer also asked citizens about possible government measures:

Mining with renewable surpluses: it is the only proposal with general approval; 42% support Spain mining Bitcoin using surplus clean energy, compared to 37% who oppose it.

National Strategic Reserve: the idea of creating a Bitcoin reserve by the State has a firm rejection from 55% of the population, receiving only 27% support.
